Tortillas are cakes that come to us fromdistant mexico. They are somewhat similar to the well-known pita bread: thin rolled dough, roasted in a pan. To taste, they are rather unusual, not quite similar to plain bread. But the most important thing is that they should be eaten hot, only then you can feel their inexpressible taste.
The name itself is translated as "round cake", and is pronounced in two ways: "tortilla" or "tortie". In Spanish, the second option will be correct, but the first is more familiar to the Russian ear.
In Mexico, tortillas are one of the mostcommon foods used in food. What only one of them do not cook! With the help of flat cakes, they eat sauces, dip them into goulash, stuff them with a variety of fillings.
Now "round cakes" can be purchased inin our stores, but this is not so easy, because not every one is commercially available. Yes, and the taste is much inferior to the present: the dough is more like rubber.

Corn Tortillas
Necessary ingredients:
- two glasses of corn flour;
- one and a half glasses of water;
- half a teaspoon of salt;
- some cooking oil for frying.
Preparation
To start, mix the flour and salt. Quietly pour water into the bowl while kneading the dough. It should look like clay: soft, dry and pliable.
Mass cut into small pieces and roll them into thin cakes. The dough should not be torn. If it happened, add some more water to it.
It is very important to choose the right pan forfrying. The best choice for tortilla is cast iron, because it distributes heat evenly. Add some butter to the pan and fry the tortillas on one side first, and then on the other, until they have a slightly golden color. Cover the finished cakes with something to keep them warm.
Flour Tortillas
If for any reason the corn flour option does not suit you, but you want to make tortilla tortillas, the flour dough recipe is just for you.
Ingredients:
- four glasses of flour;
- small spoon of baking powder;
- a spoonful of salt;
- glass of water;
- some vegetable oil.
Cooking process
In a large enough bowl, mix the flour, salt, andbaking powder. Then add some vegetable oil or fat. Knead dough well to avoid lumps. Make a small indentation and pour in half the water, stir, and then add the rest. The resulting dough should be slightly sticky.
Leave the mass for about ten minutes. Cut into pieces and roll them. Fry the tortillas in the pan. As soon as you see bubbles appear, they are ready.
Where to use tortilla
Both cooked houses and bought flat cakes aregreat snack. Simply select the filler: here you can fantasize almost limitlessly! For example, very tasty is obtained with chicken, fried in a skillet, and feta cheese. Another type of filling is beef and red beans.
Just like pita bread, tortillas can be stuffed with grated cheese with mayonnaise, garlic and greens, and then cut into small pieces.
Do not be afraid to experiment.They can even be filled with shrimp and other seafood. An interesting taste is obtained if the cakes with the filling are baked in the oven. In addition, they can be served and just like that, as bread, along with sauces.
