What is a region?
The region is part of the state territory, which has its own boundaries. The formation of areas took place during the time of the Russian Empire. Each region has its own administrative center. Usually it is the largest city. The area of most regions of Russia is about the same. Such units were created on the basis of a certain community, the homogeneity of the population that lives in the territory.
The formation of areas during the Russian Empire
At the beginning of the last century, the legal essence of thisThe concepts were slightly different from the modern common understanding. As is known, provinces were the main administrative part of the Russian Empire, but at the same time, from the middle of the 18th century, the first regions appeared. Regulatory differences were in the order of management of the territories, as the provinces were formed on the already fully developed lands. The region is a territorial entity created on the lands newly incorporated into the state. It was politically inexpedient to create a large province on practically unexplored lands.
Самая первая область, созданная в Российской Empire - Olonets. The foundation year was 1776. It existed in this status until 1784. Three years after Olonetskaya, the Kolyvan Region was created on the newly annexed lands. These lands were mastered by the Russians rather quickly, because already in 1783 the region became a separate province. In a year, in 1784, 2 more regions will be created - Taurian (everyone remembers, probably, the Kuchuk-Kanaijir peace treaty of 1783, according to which Crimea was transferred to Russia) and the Yakutsk region. During the 19th century, another 29 provinces were created in the empire, which gradually joined provinces, and only a few of them existed until the collapse of the empire.

This is the only territory of the Russian Federation whose administrative center is not legally defined, because the actual center of the region (the city of Moscow) is the capital of the state.
