Revival of the Navy
The Russian Empire met the 20th century aseconomically powerful power, but the navy was hopelessly inferior to the fleets of potential adversaries. The Russian-Japanese war, which collapsed in 1905, showed both the technical backwardness of the ships and the outdated tactics of the naval commanders. The command counted on an easy victory - "throwing the Japanese caps", but the complete defeat in the Battle of Tsushima was a real shock for the military leaders.
At the same time, England, France, Italy, Germanyorganized an arms race, building more and more powerful ships. It became obvious that it would be difficult to guarantee the security of the empire without the creation of a new generation of military ships.
To the glory of the fatherland
November 14, 1912 in St. Petersburg, in a convenientdeep water area of the Gulf of Finland, the opening of the shipyard "Northern Shipyard" (SZSV), at that time called "Putilov shipyard". The original purpose of the establishment of the enterprise was to replenish the Russian Empire's navy with new modern ships capable of withstanding the regional fleets of neighboring countries, primarily Germany. The best European engineers participated in designing and equipping the production, the world experience of shipbuilding was widely used.
For a few years, Severnaya Verf became one of thethe main sites for the construction of a modern navy. The enterprise is proud of the first domestic steam-turbine destroyer Novia (built in 1913), the unique vessel Volkhov (1915), designed to rescue submarines, the Kommuna (1922), the oldest in the Navy.
Labor feat
The most serious test for the strength of the plant"Severnaya Verf" was held in the Second World War. With the beginning of the war, factory workers at an accelerated pace carried out repairs, construction, re-equipment of ships for the needs of the fleet. On June 23, 1941, the enterprise began re-equipping the ship "Andrei Zhdanov" from the passenger ship to the hospital ship.
At the same time, work on the ships withhigh degree of readiness. By July 9, it was possible to complete the state tests of the destroyer "Statniy", on July 18 "Skory" entered service. By August 30, the unfinished "Strict" and "Slender" had been prepared for combat operations. These ships immediately joined their artillery in the defense of Leningrad.

In 2011, the command announced the conclusion of a contract with the plant for the manufacture of 12 corvettes and frigates in addition to 5 previously ordered ships. Thus, the Navy allowed to load production facilities until 2020, the order book amounted to a record 200 billion rubles. This is the largest contract with the Ministry of Defense in the history of the shipyard.
The shipyard mastered the production of small and mediumwarships, dry cargo ships, ferries, passenger, research, reconnaissance vessels, water craft to escort and support the fleets of the Russian Navy. In addition to the assembly, the team is engaged in repairing ships of varying degrees of complexity, their maintenance, replacement of obsolete components with new ones.
