Any signs of concussion - an occasion to consult a doctor

The brain is one of the mostpoorly studied areas of the human body, therefore, modern medicine knows relatively little about its functions and capabilities. All that is known - the approximate location of the brain regions, the composition of the tissues, the arrangement of the convolutions, does not give us complete information about higher nervous activity, therefore various diseases and lesions of the brain also present a huge problem. Any signs of concussion in the presence of other circumstances can act as signs of other diseases, therefore, diagnosis requires accuracy and cannot be done carelessly.

Concussion - Causes and Possible Damage

Concussion is a disorder.brain activity, which occurred as a result of a head injury and which is in no way associated with existing vascular damage. This condition is diagnosed in more than half of the patients who have had any head injuries. During the impact, the human brain is strongly and sharply shaken, then by inertia from the inside it hits the skull box again. It is accurate to say what happens to the brain substance at this moment and how exactly the signs of concussion are caused, but there is a theory that the trauma changes the physicochemical characteristics and properties of the brain substance due to a short-term sharp increase in intracranial pressure. In addition, despite the fact that the integrity of the tissues is not broken, the entire brain suffers because the interconnections between different compartments and cells are lost, albeit for a short time, which also explains the violation of functions. Also, an injury can provoke a deterioration in the nutrition of brain cells, which degrades the functional connection between parts of the brain.

Symptoms of concussion may vary between patients.

Практически у всех больных первые признаки brain concussions are similar to each other, they are reduced to a brief loss of consciousness and vomiting, there are no memories of the moment of injury and the events that preceded it. Part of the loss of memory classifies signs of concussion, because the longer the amnesia and the longer the loss of consciousness, the more severe the patient's condition.

The extent of the lesion and the determination of the severity of the patient's condition

It is now customary to distinguish between three degrees.concussion. The first degree is characterized by confusion of consciousness, which is not accompanied by either amnesia or loss of consciousness. In the second stage, the signs of mild concussion are somewhat complicated, amnesia begins. The third degree - loss of consciousness and memory, the most severe defeat. In fact, the designation of time, which relate to varying degrees of damage, is very conditional - for some doctors a loss of consciousness for a couple of minutes is sufficient for establishing a diagnosis of concussion, and for others it takes more than an hour. The maximum time of loss of consciousness and coma-like state is 6 hours, after which the patient's condition can no longer be classified as a minor injury with a good prognosis, as this indicates extensive damage to the brain tissue.

After the patient's consciousnessrecovers, there are complaints of nausea, tinnitus, flushing, dizziness, sweating, disturbances of thermoregulation. Such signs of concussion may be accompanied by pains in the movement of the eyeballs, difficulty in reading, some neurological and psychiatric symptoms. The patient may be over-excited, it is difficult for him to stay calm for a long time and “sit in one place”, but he cannot engage in any activity for long. Diagnosis of concussion in children causes particular difficulties, since they are not always able to accurately describe their symptoms and characterize their condition.
