The book "Fried green tomatoes" was not the first work of Americanwriter Fanny Flagg, but by far the most popular. Before the novel brought it to the top of fame, the girl lived a rich and varied life. The diagnosis of “dyslexia”, made by her when she was still in school, seemed to put an end to the dream of a career as a novelist, however, Fannie (then Patricia Neal) took the destiny into her own hands and signed up for the theatrical troupe. After studying at the university, she linked herself to television for quite a long time: she wrote scripts, performed occasional roles in various shows, and even starred in several films (“Stay Hungry”, “Woman without Rules”). Subsequently, when Flagg had to make a choice, she still stopped at literature.

The first book, Daisy Fei and Miracles, was a very successful debut for a beginning author, but the real public recognition was given to the novel Fried Green Tomatoes. In particular, he was highly appreciated by such a venerable writer as Harper Lee. A little later, Flagg herself wrote a script based on the book: the film version is now considered a classic of American cinema.
"Roasted Green Tomatoes": the plot
The events described in the novel unfold in1985 in America, more precisely, in the provincial town of Birmingham. The central character of the book is Evelyn Couch, a housewife. Her mother-in-law spends the last days in a nursing home. Despite this, women have a rather tense relationship. In the same place, Evelyn meets another resident of this dreary place - Ninni Tredgood, who tells the heroine the story of her life in Polustanka (a real town in Alabama). Essentially, "Fried green tomatoes "can be called a book about the crisismiddle-aged: Evelyn's children grew up long ago and became independent, the relationship with her husband falls apart, every morning women begin with thoughts of loneliness and death. Is 48 years really the end of life, and all that remains for her from now on is to destroy chocolate bars in large quantities and plunge deeper and deeper into the abyss of anguish? It was during such a difficult period that Evelyn met Ninni — she also went through a difficult life, but did not allow herself to give up. Early in losing both parents, widowed, left with an inferior son in her arms, Ninni never stopped thanking fate for the opportunity to breathe, laugh, rejoice. Communicating with Ninnie helps Evelyn see all the events happening to her in a different light. Gradually, true friendship is born between women.
