Intestinal irrigoscopy is one of the types of X-ray examination of the digestive system organs. Despite the use of other diagnostic methods, this procedure cannot be replaced by any otherresearch. Intestinal irrigoscopy is a method for diagnosing diseases of the large intestine after it is filled with a radiopaque substance. As a contrast, a solution of barium sulfate is most often used, which is injected into the intestine in a retrograde manner.
Indications and contraindications for the study
Indications for intestinal irrigoscopy:
- congenital malformations of the colon;
- tumors;
- Diverticulosis and diverticulitis;
- chronic colitis of various etiologies;
- cicatricial intestinal constriction.
Irrigoscopy of the intestine is contraindicated in case of possible perforation of the intestinal wall, the serious condition of the subject.
Diagnostic value of irrigoscopy inlargely depends on the quality of the preparation of the patient. The purpose of the preparation is the maximum possible release of intestines from gases, food debris, mucus, and liquid that interferes with the study.
Preparation for carrying out an irrigoskopiya
Preparation for an irrigoskopiya is carried out onthree days before the scheduled study. Food products that cause gas formation in the digestive tract are excluded from the diet: milk, rye bread, legumes, potatoes, cabbage, sweets. The patient must take easily digestible food, which gives a small amount of toxins and does not cause irritation of the intestinal mucosa.
To reduce the effects of flatulence for threedays before the study, the patient should take adsorbents, that is, activated carbon or carbol 2 tablets three times a day. Tablets of activated carbon can be replaced with a warm decoction of medicinal chamomile, which you need to drink 200-300 ml during the day. To prepare the broth, one tablespoon of dried chamomile flowers is brewed with 200-250 ml of boiling water, infused for half an hour and taken orally after straining.
При стойком запоре рекомендуется прием laxatives, with the exception of salt drugs that have an irritating effect on the intestinal mucosa, causing flatulence. In addition to laxatives for the release of the intestine, you can do a light massage of the abdomen, special exercises of physical therapy. The day before the examination, it is necessary to stop taking drugs that reduce the tone and motility of the intestine.
Накануне ирригоскопии после обеда пациент должен drink 40-50 ml of vegetable oil. In the evening, after supper, two cleansing enemas are made with a half-hour interval to release and flush the intestines. In the morning, two or three hours before the examination should be limited to a light breakfast. After 30-40 minutes after breakfast, for a complete cleansing of the intestines, you should again do a cleansing enema, which will have to be repeated in half an hour.
Immediately before performing irrigoscopythe colon is filled with a radiopaque solution, after which x-rays are taken of different parts of the intestine in a different position of the patient. After removal of the contrast material from the intestine, a x-ray examination of the colon mucous membrane is performed. If a tumor is suspected, intestinal irrigoscopy is performed with an additional filling of the intestine with air, which allows for more detailed consideration of changes in the mucous membrane. This method is called double contrast irrigoscopy.
If intestinal irrigoscopy is prescribed, preparation for the study should be carried out in full, as recommended by the doctor. Otherwise, the research results will be incorrect.
