Metro "Frunzenskaya": a description and an excursion into the history

There are architectural stations in the Moscow metro.whose appearance is a visible embodiment of the era in which they were built. Very remarkable in this regard is the metro station "Frunzenskaya". If you do not hurry, then these stations can be visited as a kind of architectural museum.

From the history of the Moscow metro

Station "Frunzenskaya" Sokolnicheskaya lineMoscow Metro took the first passengers in 1957. According to the existing tradition, its discovery was timed to the May Day holidays. "Frunzenskaya" was put into operation operating in the starting area between the stations "Park Kultury" and "Sportivnaya". Sokolnicheskaya line in the fifties, actively developed in the south-western direction. This was due to the need to ensure reliable transport communications areas of active housing construction with the center of the capital. The name of its metro station "Frunzenskaya" received in honor of the Soviet military and statesman. But the design name of the station was "Khamovnicheskaya".

Khamovniki

But the embankment of the Moscow River, and the streets in the oldtimes were called "Khamovnicheskie". This is one of the most ancient characteristic place names of Moscow. In historical sources it is constantly mentioned from the sixteenth century. At that time it was a working margin, where white, or “boorish”, linen was produced. And lived weavers, khamovniki, engaged in this craft. But the original Moscow name for a time completely disappeared from the map of the capital, after it was perpetuated the name of the outstanding Soviet military leader during the civil war, M. V. Frunze. It was in this area of the capital that the Frunzenskaya metro station was built. By this time, Khamovniki greatly changed. From the former working outskirts, the area turned into a very prestigious habitat of the Soviet party, military and technical nomenclature. And the metro station that opened here completely corresponded to him. The Frunzensky District is distinguished by its stylistic unity, and the lobby of the metro station does not contradict it.

Architectural features

The entrance to the station provides one ground lobby. In 1984 it was reconstructed and partially built into the building of the Moscow Palace of Youth. Metro "Frunzenskaya" in a constructive sense is a three-vaulted deep pylon station. At a depth of 42 meters, three escalators lead to the central hall. The dominant architectural style is classicism. By its compositional decision, this is one of the most expressive stations (from among those built in the post-war period). Architects did not change the sense of style. It is not overloaded with unnecessary decorations typical of other stations of the same time. In the decoration of the interior is dominated by white and red granite. Bronze decorative elements look very impressive. At the end of the hall there is a bust of Frunze by Vuchetich.

In the cultural context of history

The metro station "Frunzenskaya" is also remarkablethat is a kind of completion of the whole architectural era. She was lucky in the sense that she was built in accordance with the author's project and did not fall under the action of the well-known decision of the party and the government to combat architectural excesses. This document was aimed at saving money and allowed building subway lines faster. But the station, which has managed to get under it, is easy to find out by dullness, ugliness and bare functionalism. There are a lot of them in the Moscow metro, in particular on the Filyovskaya line and in the Izmailovo district. The fallacy of this concept was not realized immediately, and the consequences were overcome only in the late seventies. But even after the architectural era of enforced timelessness ended in the Moscow metro, and the new stations found their face, they looked completely different. Frunzenskaya and other stations of this period are rightfully considered classics.
