Elets State University. I.A.Bunin was founded in 1939. But its creation is preceded by a half-century history. In 1979, a female gymnasium was established in Yelets. Her graduates had the right to teach in primary schools and at home.

In 1939, the number of students was 225. The training was conducted in two buildings, the first of which was located at the address: Lev Tolstoy Street, Building 83. This building remembered even before the revolution. The second building was equipped with a student dormitory.
Young people from Oryol, Kursk and Voronezhoblasts studied in Yelets teaching institute. Training was paid. Its cost was 150 rubles per year, while the scholarship - from 116 rubles per month. Such conditions could not but encourage students to study more diligently, given that most of them were from poor families. Before the war, there was an active selection of teaching staff, curricula were formed, the library fund was replenished. The first issue took place in 1941.
At the beginning of the war, many second year students leftto the front. The rest took part in the defense of the city. During the days of occupation, part of the property of the institute was destroyed, which they did not manage to evacuate. After the end of the war, it took years to restore textbooks and other materials.
