Far north, at the mouth of the cold North RiverDvina, located the old and picturesque city of Arkhangelsk. And there are dozens of interesting and beautiful monuments, monuments, sculptural compositions dedicated to various events, animals and famous personalities.
Arkhangelsk: a little about the city
The capital of the Russian north is cold,pacified and very atmospheric city, located thirty kilometers from the White Sea. The climate is harsh: winters are cold and long, and summers are short and cool. More than two months (from May 17 to July 26) white nights last.
In the northern city of lumberjacks and sailors todaylives about 350 thousand people. In Arkhangelsk, there are two museums: art and local lore, and the main place for tourist trips is Chumbarova-Luchinsky Avenue with several dozen wooden houses. Monuments of Arkhangelsk (and there are quite a few of them here) surprise with their diversity, artistic beauty, and sometimes originality.
Perhaps the most important attractionArkhangelsk is the Northern Dvina River. A very colorful and cozy embankment is laid along its coast. It is here that you can see many interesting and beautiful monuments of Arkhangelsk. For example, a modest, but very majestic monument to Peter the Great. Or a very touching sculpture of a savior seal. About these and other monuments of the city will be discussed below.
Monuments of the city of Arkhangelsk
The very first sculpture in the city appeared in 1832. And it has survived to the present day. This is a monument to Mikhail Lomonosov, perhaps the most famous native of these lands.
All the monuments of Arkhangelsk can be divided into several groups:
- obelisks and monuments dedicated to various historical events (obelisk of the north, zero versts and others);
- monuments to prominent personalities (MV Lomonosov, Yuri Gagarin, Peter the First);
- military monuments (Victory monuments, a monument to the Solovki youths, and others);
- comic sculptural compositions (for example, the sculpture "The Archangel Man").
Некоторые памятники Архангельска удивляют своей spontaneity. For example, a sculpture of Stepan Pisakhov, mounted on Chumbarov-Luchinsky Avenue, looks very interesting. The famous artist, writer and storyteller is depicted here with an elegant cane and a large gull sitting on his hat.
Monument M.V. Lomonosov
The world-famous scientist and lexicographer MichaelLomonosov was born in the village of Mishaninskaya Arkhangelgorod province. Therefore, it is not surprising that the first monument in Arkhangelsk was erected to this particular person. The author of granite sculpture was the Russian monumentalist Ivan Martos (author of the monument to de Richelieu in Odessa).
Money (46 thousand rubles) was collected "by the whole world."Many well-known figures and patrons of art, in particular Lomonosov’s granddaughter Sofia Raevskaya, donated considerable sums to the creation. In 1829 the monument was made. A year later, he arrived in Arkhangelsk.
The composition includes two figures.The first is the great scientist standing in ancient Roman toga. The second is a naked winged genius, kneeling in front of Lomonosov. It is curious that the monument three times changed its location in the city. Finally, in 1930, he decorated the square in front of the forestry institute, where it still stands.
Monument to the seal in Arkhangelsk
On the embankment of the Northern Dvina stands, perhaps, the most touching sculpture of the city. This is a monument to the seal rescuer, established in 2010 near the Eternal Flame.
The choice of location for the sculpture is not at allrandom. During the Second World War, famine raged in Arkhangelsk. And from the sad fate of many residents of the city saved the seals! Akhangelsk residents ate meat (nourishing, though tasteless) and fat from these animals. In addition, the warm hides of the seals saved them from the cold.
"Oh, how many people you saved from hunger and cold" - reads the inscription on the pedestal of the monument. Sculpture seal itself weighs 900 kg and has a half meter height.
