The optimum is a gap of about 1.5 mm, and this value can be reached either by narrowing the gap (by tapping gently on the side electrode) or by expanding it by means of equally careful bending.

If it is short, the products of combustion will settle on the thread of the head, and a normal candle will be very difficult to install later. And if it is long, the same elements will settle on the candle, which will lead to the need for engine overhaul. A candle of an inappropriate diameter will not be easy (impossible) to screw in, and an incorrect heat rating will lead to carbon deposits, early wear of candles, engine failures.
