Design

Plans to create this staircase in the territoryVolzhsky slope first visited A. Shulpin in 1939, when he was chairman of the Gorky City Executive Committee. At that time it was quite a spectacular step, because the connecting link between the city center and the Volga was to become the Chkalovskaya staircase (Nizhny Novgorod).
Photos show that really onethe embankment is connected to the other thanks to this construction, which, according to the bold plans of the architects, was to become more ambitious than the Potemkinskaya staircase, which you can see in Odessa.
The project was not implemented immediately, because thisprevented the very early war with Germany. The developments were returned already in 1943, when the given territory was being restored from the consequences of the bombings by the German invaders. The idea was further developed and further advanced. Shulpin made a trip to Moscow, where he was introduced to the project of Yakovlev, Rudnev and Munz - talented architects from Leningrad.
Construction
It was originally planned that the staircase will bego down from the hotel complex "Russia". However, it was moved to the monument to Chkalov, who was a friend of the main developer. Due to this, the structure in its location approached the city Kremlin of the Middle Ages. After receiving the agreement from the capital allocated funds, thanks to which it was possible to carry out the construction of a large-scale object, glorifying the victory in the battle for Stalingrad.
