The Serene Mosque

Brief historical information

The following historical fact is interesting:the Muslim temple was decided to erect on the right bank of the Kaban River, which in those days was Russian land. In addition, this is the only such construction built under the Soviet government.

How was the construction going? In 1912, representatives of religion developed a historical plan for the transition to the adoption of Islam. The mosque was designed by Evgeny Pechnikov, a well-known engineer-architect. The three-level minaret of the Zakabany mosque became a reflection of the 3 stages in the life of the Volga Bulgars: pre-Islamic, medieval and new.

The construction of the Muslim temple became one of theparts of this project. By 1914, when only madrassas were built, the process was suspended by the events of the First World War. The mosque was opened only in 1926 after receiving the permission of Joseph Stalin (more details below in the article). However, after 4 years the country's authorities issued a decree to close the temple, after which the Muslim crescent from the minaret was removed, as with all similar religious structures, and the Soviet flag was hoisted instead. Such was the policy of the state at the time.

After the Great Patriotic War, the building wasschool and kindergarten. Then DOSAAF settled down in it, and in 1991 the mosque was again returned to the Muslim community. There are suggestions that this was made possible by the fighter for the rights of the Tatars Iskhak Lutfullin. After returning to the temple of the old name, he again opened his doors to visitors. At the mosque, there is an evening school.

Since then, the building has not undergone any changes.

The mosque is located in the picturesque area, in the center of Kazan, on the coast of Lake Kaban. Its official name is the Mosque of the 1000th anniversary of the adoption of Islam.

During the construction of the mosque the style was usedA romantic modernist style with interspersed eastern Muslim motifs. There is one room in the mosque, the location of the minaret is angular. The building is two-storeyed: on the first floor there is a prayer hall, educational rooms on the second floor.

The high quaternion of the minaret has an octagonalThe trunk, which imperceptibly passes into the light cylinder. At the very top it is crowned with a pointed dome with an openwork carved eaves. The mosque is decorated uniquely shaped minaret, perfectly combined with curved and stepped architraves, window archivolt and unusually shaped portals.

Romantic style in a complex with Muslimoriental motifs gives the Zakabany mosque a special national flavor. The combination of styles adds to the architecture of the building the Arab-Moorish notes of the Middle Ages. The walls are made of red brick with green ceramic inserts.

As well as many years ago, the main function is performed by the first floor, where a bright and spacious prayer hall is located. On the second floor there are training sessions.

On the amazing historical fact

In 1922, a Muslim delegation from the cityKazan finally got a meeting with Joseph Stalin (at that time a People's Commissar for Nationalities Affairs) and persuaded him - in some incomprehensible way! - give permission for the construction of the mosque.

This fact to this day is surprising, given the attitude to religion at that time.

During the 80-90-ies of the XX century, he took an active part in the national Tatar movement and made a lot of efforts to return to the faithful of many mosques in Kazan. After completing his military service, energetic Khazrat Iskhak entered the Ufa Madrassah with a simple shakird, but later became an imam of the Zakabannaya mosque. He died in 2007.
