Khanenko Museum: history, exposition, address

Khanenko Museum, formerly known as the MuseumWestern and Eastern art, located right in the center of Kiev. Now it is the largest collection of works of art in Ukraine. On the history of the museum and its collection, read further in the article.

Background History

Spouses Khanenko came from noble families.Bogdan Khanenko was the son of a nobleman, and Varvara was the daughter of Tereshchenko, the famous Kiev sugar factory. The couple was always interested in art, and income from business went to buy antiques and painting.

About forty years Khanenko collected worksart. Barbara was one of the first to collect Old Russian icons. The collection was also replenished with world masterpieces of painting and sculpture brought from Berlin, Vienna, Madrid and other corners of the earth. Thus, the collection included Zurbaran's still life “Tableware and a Mill for Chocolate”, works by Rubens, Rembrandt’s school, works by D. Velasquez F. Cesare, and others.

In 1913, Bogdan Khanenko bought the apartment building,in order to open it the exhibition of his collection. But during the war, most of the exhibits had to be taken to the Moscow Historical Museum. After the death of Bogdan Khanenko in 1917, Varvara returned the collection to Kiev. According to the will of her husband, she opens the Khanenko Museum in the capital.

The street where the Khanenko Museum is located,is the completion of the area plan near the University. House number 15 belonged to the entrepreneur and philanthropist Tereshchenko. The author of the project was the architect Meltzer.

In 1888 Bogdan Khanenko bought the house andplaced in it a rich collection of works of art. The new owners immediately began to design the house. Over the interiors worked for several years. Artists and architects Vrubel, Marconi, Melzer, Kotarbinsky and others took part in this.

Initially, it was planned to create a private closedcollections. But active philanthropy and work on the organization of the current National Art Museum of Ukraine inspired Bogdan Khanenko to open a public museum. For this, the house owners decided to decorate each room according to the collection located in it.

В здании будущего музея появилась «Красная room ”in the Renaissance style,“ Golden Cabinet ”in the Rococo style,“ Delft dining room ”in the Dutch style,“ The Cabinet of Karelian birch ”in the style of Russian classicism and the Gothic“ Green Room ”. The lobby and the main entrance were made in the Baroque style.

By 1891, the collection expanded markedly. And architect Krivosheev was entrusted with work on a two-story superstructure above the mansion. On the main facade there are images of the coat of arms of the Khanenko family.

Among the exhibits collected by Barbara and BogdanKhanenko, there are objects of ancient and Egyptian works, Japanese woodcut, Italian majolica, Saxon and Chinese porcelain, bronze and earthenware from Iran. The Khanenko Museum presents works of Italian, Flanders, Dutch, Dutch, Spanish and French arts.

The entire collection is located in different rooms independing on the subject. There is a hall “Art of China”, a hall “Art of Buddhism”, a hall dedicated to Japan, the countries of Islam, Greece, Rome, Egypt. Separately placed painting, sculpture, graphics, arts and crafts.

The most famous exhibits are worksPaul Rubens, Leonart Bramer, diptych "Adoration of the Magi", "Portrait of Infanta Margarita". Italian art is represented by works of the Renaissance and Baroque. Among the French works are works by Claude Vernet, Louis Tokke, Pierre Suebler, decorative panels by Francois Boucher.

Oriental Art is represented by Chinesepainting on silk, bronze cast figures, enamels and varnishes, a collection of Japanese netsuke, engravings and swords. The art of Islamic countries is represented by works from Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Turkmenistan.

In the very center of Kiev, near the universitythem. T.G. Shevchenko is the Art Museum of Khanenko. Museum address: st. Tereshchenkovskaya, 15 - 17, Shevchenko district. The nearest metro station is Lev Tolstoy Square (blue line) or Teatralnaya metro station (red line).

Opening hours and prices

The museum is open on all days except Mondays and Tuesdays.

For visitors, it is open from 10.30 to 17.30.

On the first Wednesday of each month, you can visit the museum for free, but these days the museum is only open until 2pm.

Visiting exhibits of the Western and Oriental arts is paid separately The cost of entry for each of these exhibitions is:

  • 15 UAH (39 rubles) - adult ticket;
  • 8 UAH (20 rubles) - student.

Attending two expositions is worth:

  • 25 UAH (65 rubles) - for adults;
  • 12 UAH (32 rubles) - for students;
  • 8 UAH (20 rubles) - for schoolchildren and retirees.
