In the XVI century on the site of a modern cemeterythe village of Pokrovskoe was located, which is owned by the Novospassky monastery. In the first half of the seventeenth century, a wooden church of the Protection of the Virgin was built on the monastery grounds. A hundred years later, the temple was rebuilt in stone. Officially, the Pokrovsk cemetery was opened at the church only in 1858. According to some historical sources, the first burials in this area appeared much earlier. Historical tombstones and rich crypts in the cemetery has not survived. The fact is that in the 19th century, mostly peasants were buried here. Simple wooden crosses were installed as insignia on the graves.
