Vasnetsov's painting "Alenushka": how did it all start?

picture Vasnetsov Alenushka
Painting Vasnetsov "Alenushka" is familiar to everyoneRussian child since childhood: it is often used to illustrate the tale of the brother Ivanushka and sister Alyonushka. It is interesting that initially the artist himself called his picture not “Alenushka”, but “Fool”. Probably, if the picture had retained its name to this day, it would hardly have been studied in school during a lesson in the development of speech. But the artist, fortunately, changed his mind: he renamed the picture, although the word “Fool” at that time meant only “holy fool” or “orphan”. What is the history of the picture? Painting Vasnetsov "Alenushka" appeared not by accident. In 1880, he studied landscapes in Okhtyrka, but in his head he lived the image of a fairy-tale girl: sad, big-eyed, sad. The image did not want to come together, until one day the artist met a bare-headed, unknown girl. Vasnetsov was amazed at the extent to which she was Russian, with what Russian spirit she breathed.

Painting "Alyonushka" Vasnetsov. Description

Today, the description of the picture is included in the programRussian language. On her example, schoolchildren get acquainted with the concept of “painting”, “composition”, with some other terms, learn to express their thoughts, choose the right words. What did V.M. Vasnetsov portrayed? Alyonushka, bareheaded and barefoot, sits on a rock by the water. The girl is probably cold, because autumn has come. This can be seen in the black water, a few yellow leaves on its surface, in the beginning to turn yellow tree branches in the background.

The hands of the girl with thin, tightly clenched fingers, lie on your lap. Alyonushka laid her head on them and looked into the pond with anguish. What is she thinking about? Is he thirsty to see his brother? Thinking about what awaits her? The artist reflected the grief and hopelessness in the girl’s eyes with such force that even in the eyes of the spectators tears come to her eyes. Loneliness of Alyonushka, her confusion and helplessness underlines the landscape: behind is the impenetrable wilderness of the forest, starting right behind the meadow. Ahead - black, attractive look pool. Both the forest and the pool seem to be especially black against the background of green fir trees, sedges, trees beginning to turn yellow. But it is these trees that are fenced off, as if protecting Alyonushka from dark forest forces. Even black sediment grows green sedge. Vasnetsov's Alyonushka picture evokes a slight feeling of sadness, but it is not at all sad. After all, if trees turn green, grass grows, then life goes on? And sad Alyonushka can also be happy? Isn't this what she dreams of? At one time, Igor Grabar called the picture one of the best in the whole Russian school of painting. Maybe it was precisely because Vasnetsov was able to convey in the image of Alyonushka not only the image of a Russian girl, but also the soul of a Russian person who is able to be sad, but not able to despair. Someone thinks the picture is gloomy, sad and hopeless. Others, looking at her, have a slight sadness, because the end of the tale is well known. What do you feel?
