The image of Natalka-Poltavka is interesting from all sides.When Peter returns, the girl tells her that she will not marry him, despite the fact that the matchmaking was successful. Seeing that Natasha really loves another, he acts nobly: the bailiff refuses the bride and allows Peter to marry.

It is a collected image of a simple people. He does not want to give up his beloved, so he goes to work to prove to her father that his intentions are serious. True, the guy does not differ in boldness and determination: after learning that the girl was wedded, he sacrifices himself and advises her to marry him.
In opposition to Peter put his friend Nikolai - an orphan, a burlaka, but a cheerful and smart guy. He helps a friend to fight for his love, and then wants to go to Zaporozhye.
