Moebius tape - an endless mystery of our time

Mobius strip - a simple but amazing thing. It can be done in a couple of seconds, and there are a lot of surprises, patterns and properties of this phenomenon. To make this clearer in practice, take a regular strip of paper, glue, connect its ends. But it is imperative that one end is turned upside down with respect to the other half a turn. Here is the famous Mobius strip.

the Mobius strip
О получившейся загадочной поверхности можно talk endlessly. Ask yourself how many surfaces are on a paper ring. Two? And here is no - one. Check it out is easy. Take a felt-tip pen or a pencil and try to paint over one of the sides of the tape, without looking up or going over to the other side. Happened? And where is the unfinished side? That's it ...

The name of the tape was given by its inventor:August Ferdinand Mobius, professor at the University of Leipzig. He devoted his long and fruitful life (and this is 78 years) to scientific work, and he kept his mind clear until he left. In his 75 years, the professor described the unique properties of a one-sided surface with apparent two-layer. Since then, the best minds of geometry, physics, and even spirituality have explored this object up and down.

You can independently spend severalexperiments, picking up a Mobius tape. Try to cut it lengthwise, having previously drawn the middle line over the entire surface. What do you think will work out? Two rings of smaller width? Wrong again - one thing! Twice longer than the previous one, but twisted already twice. Here it just will already have two surfaces, and not one, as in the first case. This curl is called the Afghan ribbon, it is also widely known to researchers. By the way, in spirituality this effect is called a symbol of duality and is interpreted as the illusory perception of the one.

And if you again draw a longitudinal line, but notin the middle, and closer to the edge by a third of the width of the tape? Cut the resulting ring, and you will have two of them in your hands: the Mobius band and the Afghan band, and in an incomprehensible way they will be linked with each other.

But this is not all surprises. Try when gluing the tape into the ring to take not one, but two paper strips. And then three or even four. I guarantee: the result will surprise you even more!

A curious experience can be put and hypothetically.Taking a double Mobius strip (that is, glued together from two strips) and putting a finger between them (a pencil, a wooden stick - whatever), we can drive them between the tapes endlessly, thus proving that the figure consists of two separate parts. Now imagine that between these ribbons a fly crawls. The bottom bar for it will be "floor", the top - "ceiling", and so on to infinity.

But in reality, things are not as simple as they seem. After all, if you put a mark on the beginning of the travel of the fly "on the floor", then when the insect makes a circle, this same label will already be "on the ceiling." And to go back "to the floor," you will need to make another round.

Imagine a fly crawling down the street. To the right of it are houses under even numbers, and to the left, respectively, under odd numbers. While taking a walk, at some point our traveler will be surprised to notice that odd numbers are already on the right, and even numbers are on the left! It is terrible to imagine such a situation on our real roads with right-hand traffic, because soon we will have to deal with other people strolling head-on. Here it is - the Mobius strip ...

mobius tape application
The application of this and other patterns foundnot only hypothetical, but also in real life. For example, on the basis of the tape created belts in printing devices, automatic transmission, abrasive ring in the sharpening mechanisms and much more, which you do not even suspect. Truly, the Mobius strip is an enigma that can be studied endlessly!
