Before starting the story about how the Transfiguration Cathedral of Vyborg was created decency, let's talk about his predecessor -Lutheran Cathedral, which later became known as the Church of the Nativity. The fates of these two temples are closely interrelated. Local history tells that originally the first Orthodox church in the once Swedish, and later the Finnish city of Vyborg appeared after it was conquered by Peter the Great in 1710.
Lutheran Cathedral
In 1350 a wooden one was built in the city.Lutheran church. Because of the constant wars of conquest, its walls were often destroyed, and over time the building very quickly fell into disrepair. But in 1494, the magnificent Lutheran Cathedral was rebuilt on this site, which during the siege of the city by Peter I's military units, due to artillery fire, was also very badly damaged and practically could not be restored.
Residents of the city of Vyborg at the end of the militaryThe actions filed a document to the Russian military administration, where they presented a list of urban buildings destroyed during the battles, which they would like to repair and use in the future. But Tsar Peter I was surprised that he did not see in this list the main shrine of the city - the cathedral, and then he decided to take it under his jurisdiction and arrange an Orthodox church in it.
Church of the Nativity
In 1720 he issues a decree for the Holy Synod.about the restoration of the former Lutheran cathedral, in which the Church of the Nativity of Christ was to open. Externally, the building did not change, only inside its eastern part an iconostasis and an altar were made for the performance of worship services. The former greatness and wealth, as before, was no longer in the church, since at first there were few worshipers. Inheritance from the old cathedral she got two bowls for the communion of 1651, the ancient work of the ark, a silver plate on which Jesus Christ was depicted, and the gospel of 1703. Later, in 1746, nine small chandeliers appeared which, for the commemoration of their soul, were brought as a gift to the church by the Russian officer Nikita Rusinov.
Many years after the next fire, the church was handed over to the warehouse of a military garrison, by this point it was already decided to build the Transfiguration Cathedral next to it.
Prehistory
But the appearance of the Transfiguration Cathedralpreceded by one event. In the summer of 1783, Empress Catherine II was on an official visit to the Swedish king Gustav III. The retinue of the Russian ruler consisted of important state persons - E. R. Dashkova (President of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences) and A. A. Bezborodko (Chairman of the Board of Foreign Affairs). In the carriage with Bezborodko, someone N.A. Lvov was driving, having no relation to the royal retinue. He was a versatile, very talented Petersburg architect, engraver, draftsman and musician.
He created a preliminary design, according to whichbuilt the Transfiguration Cathedral. The city of Vyborg, I must say, was mentioned in its reports to Catherine II by Governor V.K. Engelhardt. In them, he testified that in this village it is necessary to build a new Russian Orthodox church.
The drawing was originally reproduced analogdome-apse planning of the temple of ancient Rome. At the beginning of the 1780s, N. A. Lvov visited Italy, and then made a translator of the scientific work of architectural solutions of the architect of the Renaissance A. Palladio. This greatly influenced a number of buildings by N. A. Lvov, who was not a certified architect.
Transfiguration Cathedral: Vyborg
In December 1786 a decree of the RussianEmpress on the construction in Vyborg Orthodox cathedral church. In the same year, Johann Brockman, appointed by the provincial architect, came to the building department of the governorship. He used the draft design of N. A. Lvov, without changing anything in the scheme of the architectural design of the church, simply reduced its size. By the way, these drawings are still stored in the Finnish State Archives.
Start of construction: Savior Transfiguration Cathedral (Vyborg)
Итак, началось возведение храма.In its original form, the Transfiguration Cathedral (Vyborg) —the photograph presented below indicates this — possessed a dome-apse part of the building, which with a hemispherical surface and side vestibules had a cube-shaped shape. Entrance doors were located on the north and south sides of the building.
Archpriest Fedor
The first archpriest of the cathedral was Vasily Fedorov. And in 1804, the new archpriest of the church, Fyodor Loginovsky, filed a report on the repair of the temple. At the beginning of the summer of 1806, a decree of the Spiritual Consistory permitted the correction of the dilapidation of a building. In 1811, there was an urgent need to buy a dwelling for the clergy. But the funds were constantly lacking, but the priest's perseverance brought its results, and in 1816 the Transfiguration Cathedral of Vyborg received a good amount from the Commission of Theological Schools. With this money, the cathedral was completely updated.
Improvement and reconstruction of the temple
After repair, it retained its former form inthe form of an elongated cross. In 1817, on September 14, the cathedral was consecrated in a solemn atmosphere with a large number of parishioners. A gilded copper cross of the St. Petersburg master S.D. Gusev was hoisted above it. Archpriest F. Loginovsky received great thanks for the effective care of the church.
In 1838 a new bell was cast - the gift of the merchant F. N. Nabilkin. Artworks were performed by the painter S.V. Postemsky, painter of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
A few years later when producedreconstruction of the Transfiguration Cathedral in 1889, a gatehouse was attached to the bell tower. In 1892 the Vyborg Diocese was established and the cathedral received the status of a cathedral. Last time it was altered according to drawings of the foreman A. Isakson.
In 1937, the Transfiguration Cathedral celebrated the 150th anniversary, and in 1987 - the 200th anniversary. In 2017, the temple will be 230 years old.
