Those who heard about the premiere of the TV series "The Witch",surely the name Mor Mortir is familiar. Who it is, interests many. Unfortunately, for the most part, people who answer this question are mistaken and provide a deliberately false answer. So, who is she?
TV series
This picture was shot in 2015 by Ukrainian directors and is currently available for viewing on many sites. The creators position their offspring as "unparalleled."
"Witch" refers to the genre of drama with elements of mysticism and consists of 20 episodes.
Serial film tells the story of a girl byName Hope (it will be later called the Sea Mortar). Who it is and where it came from, it becomes far from the first series, because the second performer of one of the main roles finds it under rather strange circumstances.
The plot of the series
The action takes place in a deaf provinciala village whose inhabitants voluntarily gave up the benefits of civilization in order to avoid urban fuss. The mysterious stranger, who is caught by a local blacksmith from the river, becomes the central figure. The girl is so weak that she cannot bind a word, so the man does not invent anything better than to take her to his home.
Кузнец выхаживает Надю, но она не спешит покидать his dwelling, because nothing remembers how she ended up in the village. Meanwhile, the relationship with the population of the girl does not add up: she has such a stunning charm that local single guys can not ignore her side.
Because of this, women begin to accuse Hope of witchcraft, and her friend, the fortuneteller, gives her the nickname “Sea Mortar” - a witch.
About the main character
В сериале исполнительница роли должна играть pretty kind and gentle girl. Hope is charming in its confusion and simplicity, so it is not surprising that it suits the male half of the population.
Despite the seemingly false accusationwitchcraft, the girl really opens up the ability to divination and white magic. Contrary to the opinions of others, Hope is a good witch, although this does not save her from universal condemnation.
As the story progresses, negative attitudes towardsthe girl is only getting stronger, because the wife of the blacksmith, with whom the young fortune-teller lives, suddenly returns to the village. She turns out to be hereditary vedunya and with might and main uses her abilities against her rival.
Sea Mortar: who is it
Initially, the creators of the series wanted to draw a parallel with the Slavic goddess of death and harvest - Morena. But, apparently, the name was too simple, so it turned upside down on a European motive.
Actually, however, from Latin Mare (or Sea)translates as “sea”, “reservoir”, so it’s quite difficult to say what prompted the writers to call the main character this way: the desire to Europeanize a Slavic name or a thoughtful move hinting at the initial scene of the girl’s appearance in the series.
From the ancient Greek, Mortar means “sufferer”, which, in principle, fits into the overall plot picture.
Moraine
This name is a very negative character.Slavic mythology. Morena (Mara, Morana, Margene) - the goddess of Winter, reaping and death. The annual withering of nature and the cruelty of frosts were associated with its arrival on the earth.
Для славян она была воплощением нечистых сил, mora and other misfortunes. When strong blizzards began, people hid from house to house and tried not to leave until the bad weather settled down. It was believed that Morena was riding his sledges in a sleigh, and the one who gets her at that moment is not very lucky.
Thus, this character has norelationship to the definition of "good witch". Although she cannot be called a frank evil: according to myths, Mara only fulfilled the duty entrusted to her by Rod. The death that this goddess brings is not the end - it is an intermediate stage, a transition to a "new Beginning".
The same can be said about the assistants of the mistressDeath, although most of them did not carry significant physical harm to others. But they could scare their ugly appearance, so the Slavs tried to avoid meeting with them, not leaving the courtyard at night.
For a long time, Mara remained a character who was frightened by disobedient children. And now the memory of her has not become obsolete until the end, because it is her effigy that is still being burned for the holiday of Maslenitsa.
The myth of the appearance of Morena
There are several versions:in one of them, Morana is the only daughter of Koshchey, in the other, the sister of Lada. In the most popular variation, Mara is also related to Lada by related ties, but in her she is the mother of the goddess of Death. Sisters of the future villain - Alive and Lelia, the mistress of life and spring.
Morena herself fascinates Koshcheya and becomes hishis wife, but instead of shrouding the world with darkness with him, the goddess loses her husband in one of the rooms of the castle, and for a time becomes her only mistress. Thus, the goddess is also very cunning, so she is identified with fog and mist, unknown forces knocking a person astray.
Учитывая эти факты, параллель между Море Мортир (who is this, described above) and the mythological character is practically not traceable. Of course, the heroine of the series is also beautiful, but even her appearance has nothing to do with the canonical goddess, and Hope does not shine with special cunning.
Conclusion
Итак, по сути, из всего представленного выше it turns out that Morer Mortir is a fictional character, invented specifically for the TV series "The Witch". He has nothing to do with the Slavs, nor with their legends. Therefore, the frequently-asked question regarding Sea Mortir ("who is this in mythology?") Is obviously incorrect.
