How to make a wooden gate with your own hands?

For today in construction are useda variety of materials. Variety has led to the fact that some resources have become much more popular than others, displacing them from the market. However, wood has always been and remains a common material, despite the fact that it has been used for a very, very long time. Wooden gates and wickets will never lose their appeal.

Why a tree?

Many may ask why wood,if there are many other, more modern materials. The answer here is quite simple. Firstly, the production and installation by own hands of a gate made of wood is a task with which almost any person can cope. Do the same, but from metal or other material will already be much more difficult. Secondly, it is much easier to process such raw materials. There is an opportunity to apply a variety of artistic carvings, patterns and other things. All this can not be done on metal and other material.

Types of gates

Before you start making wooden gates with your own hands, you should determine the look of this product. In total there are three main types of gates: swinging, sliding, lifting.

The most common type is, of course,swinging. Such gates can have either one or two doors that open inward or outward. In order to lock the gate, most often use a lock or a latch. The big drawback of this fencing is that it will take a lot of space to open them. In addition, the wider the doors of the wooden gate are, the more space there will be. It is also worth adding that it is best to mount in such a way that they open inside. Then they will not block, for example, the pavement in the street or the roadway, if the site is adjacent to the road.

The second option is rolling.Naturally, the main difference and advantage of this type over the previous one is that they take up much less space. This is mainly due to the fact that they will be opened using rollers. The gates of the gate will part in the sides, close to the fence. However, for the normal operation of such wooden gates at any time of the year, it is necessary to clear the paths along which the rollers move, from dirt, debris, leaves, snow, etc. Naturally, the installation of this type of fencing is possible only if there is a sufficiently straight section on the sides that the sashes can disperse to the sides.

Solid wooden gates

The third and rarest, perhaps, view isLifting gates. They open with a cord or a rope that lifts a monolithic wooden canvas up. However, here it is fair to note that it is not advisable to install such wooden gates to enter the site. They are best suited to a garage, for example.

Swing door option

Since this option is considered the mostit is worth considering how to make a wooden gate of this type. Naturally, the work begins with what the drawing is. You can do it manually or on a computer. The final scheme should look something like this: the image of the frame, the image of the canvas, the way the fixture is fastened. Also it is necessary to put all small details, such as handles, bolts, latch and so on.

Selection of wood for construction

This question is about half the successfulrealization of all construction. Photos of the wooden gate that amaze with beauty, many, but few people know that it was the right choice of raw materials that became the key to success. It should be noted right away that it is not always necessary to buy expensive tree species. The product can look beautiful even from the usual cheap pine. The texture of this kind of wood is quite pleasant, the tree itself is very soft, and therefore there will be no problems with the processing. Further, in spite of what kind of tree will be chosen, it is important to ensure that the moisture percentage does not exceed 18. If this value is greater, then after completion of construction, the wood is likely to dry up and the gate will warp. Another necessary step that must be performed before starting construction is the impregnation of raw materials with antiseptic and fire retardant substances. This will significantly extend the life of the material, protecting it from pests and rot.

Supports for gates

You can find many photo wooden gates forPrivate homes that will seem pretty impressive. Basically this is achieved due to powerful supports. Of course, they can also be made from wood, but we must not forget that they will be under considerable load constantly.

In order to further increase the service life,it is necessary to cover that part of the support that goes under the ground, bitumen, and top with a roofing felt. All this will help protect the tree from moisture. Some prefer a combination of wood and metal. Metal posts, of course, will be more durable, but they will also have to be properly processed, otherwise they will be covered with rust. To avoid this, you need to clean the surface, degrease, paint with anti-corrosion paint or cover with two layers of anticorrosive primer.

Materials and Tools

In order to make a wooden gate for a private house on your own, you will need the following tools:

  • roulette, plumb, level;
  • drill, screwdriver;
  • a bur, a Bulgarian, a hacksaw;
  • welding machine.

Welder need, as will beused metal posts. To work, you need minimal knowledge and skills to work with this tool. However, if there is not even one, then you can replace the metal with a tree. Of the main materials for construction will need:

  • 150 mm pipes are used as supports;
  • pipes are also used for the frame, but already 50 mm;
  • to strengthen the frame will be used bars of reinforcement 10 mm;
  • corners of steel;
  • loops in the amount of 6 pieces;
  • need 4 beams 50 x 50 mm;
  • boards for the skin of the gate;
  • paint or varnish for coating wood;
  • cement, sand, crushed stone;
  • necessary fittings (latch, bolts, handles).

Mounting of supports for gates

In order to successfully make your own wooden hinged doors, you must follow the instructions.

  1. Beginning with the installation of support pillars.For this, 150 mm of pipe is cut to the desired length, cleaned and covered with an anti-corrosion compound. The height of these parts should be greater than the gates themselves, at least 1 m. This is what you need to dig in the ground. If the fence is planned to be made heavy and cumbersome, it is better to increase it to 1.5 m.
  2. Excavated pits, whose diameter is larger than the diameter of the pillars by about 20-25 cm. You can use a drill or shovel.
  3. At the bottom of the pit you need to pour a layer of rubble in 15 cm. The layer must be carefully tampered with. For this, rubble can be slightly moistened with water.
  4. Inside the pit a formwork is installed, in the center of which the pillar is placed. Here it is advisable to work together to successfully establish a pillar.
  5. Next, a conventional solution of cement is prepared andsand ratio of 2: 3. The resulting mixture pours the entire space between the support and the formwork. If you need to get a more stable mixture, then you can add rubble. Then the proportions will be 2: 2: 3.

Continuation of work

After the pillars have been concreted, the work stops until the solution is completely dry.

  1. After the concrete has completely dried, on the requiredheight loops to the posts are welded. The ends of these devices are closed with plugs to avoid getting inside debris. To secure the sash, you need three loops per pole. It is important that each loop is at the same distance from each other. The upper and lower hinges should be 20-25 cm from the end of the post.
  2. In order to assemble the frame, for the first leafTake the pipe 50 mm and cut into the desired number of parts. After that, all the resulting segments are laid out on a flat surface in the manner that they will be installed on the gate. After checking all the verticals and evenness of the corners, you can proceed to weld the structure.
  3. Similarly, the frame for the second door is assembled. It is important that the diagonals coincide with the first.
  4. On the diagonal a steel rod is welded through the whole frame. This is done to increase the strength of the gate.
  5. After that, the "ears" are welded to the frame, naturally, in accordance with the loops on the poles. Some help will be needed here so that someone keeps the shutters while the other is doing the markup.

End of installation

After completing all of the above steps, the installation is almost complete.

  1. From the top and bottom of the frame are welded corners of steel. This should be done at a slight distance from the side elements (20-30 cm).
  2. Next, you need to fix the boards to the beams.This will be the skin of the gate. There can be two options. Either the boards are located close to each other, forming a continuous web, or with a small gap. If the installation follows the second method, it is better to first make the layout so that the boards have an equal distance between each other. A small nuance - the boards should be slightly longer than the frame from below and from above.
  3. After this, it remains only to hang theloops. The last step is fixing the chosen hardware. Cover the gate with varnish and paint before you fix the handles, bolts, etc. Check the quality of the coating is recommended annually, so that the wood lasts long and reliably.

Few decorations

The use of wood as the mainmaterial has one significant plus, the possibility of decorating the surface. Here you can show maximum imagination. For example, if you used pine for construction, you can use stain to give a more attractive appearance by changing the texture of the tree.

If there is a desire and skill in wood carving, then it is worth considering the decoration of the gate in this way. You can also decorate the doors with a multicolored mosaic, for example.
