But it is much more difficult to dispose of hazardous waste, especially from chemical and medical enterprises. General characteristics

This is a testing ground that was specifically created fordisposal of highly hazardous industrial waste. This place is located in some five (!) Kilometers from the border of St. Petersburg. In total, there are already more than one and a half tons of highly hazardous materials in the burial grounds, and their number only increases from year to year. Considering that initially such a rapid growth of the city was not planned, today the Red Bor landfill is officially recognized as extremely dangerous for St. Petersburg, and therefore a decision should be made on its conservation.

It received its name from the village of Krasny Bor,which is located a couple of kilometers from the landfill. The choice of location is explained simply: under the settlement there is a powerful vein of Cambrian clays, which provide excellent waterproofing of hazardous waste cemeteries. Work began this landfill in 1970.

Design error

It was believed that a thick layer of clay would be reliableprevent the entry of hazardous waste into groundwater. Alas, but already in the 90s it was obvious that the containers do not preserve their tightness. The result is the most dangerous pollution of rivers, lakes and fields, which are adjacent to the landfill. In addition, significant air pollution is noted, although this is strictly prohibited for landfills of this class.

Causes of claims

For a long time it was believed (according to the old Russian tradition) that all attacks on the landfill come only from a false fear of the waste that is stored there. Alas, but all fears are fully justified.

So, already in May 2007, in the course of a rathersuperficial verification revealed gross violations of all possible environmental standards. It was performed by Rostechnadzor specialists. IN AND. Matvienko, who at that time occupied the post of mayor, supported the conclusions about the need to build a new burial ground, but offered to wait until 2008, when the necessary funding will appear.

Immediately, we note that the Red Bor landfill is closed in2014 After seven years after the decision on the need for its conservation! Alas, the domestic bureaucratic machine has never been distinguished by a special speed of work.

Some misadventures

Before closing at the site almost every year there was a fire. Let's look at the most significant and famous. It is possible that many incidents were simply not reported to the supervisory authorities.

Back in 2006 there was a major accidentcaused by the explosion of drums with toxic waste. What exactly caused the detonation, so until the end and it was not clear. The fire quickly localized and extinguished.

In 2008, the situation was much more dangerous.A few barrels of fuel oil (or some similar substance) caught fire, after which the fire almost instantly spread over an area of ​​200 square meters. After a couple of hours, the fire blazed on a plot of almost two thousand square meters, spreading further and further.

As in the past case, the causes of the incidentThe incident has not been fully established. The prosecutor's office suspected deliberate arson, but after a strong impact of fire on the alleged parts of finding evidence there was nothing left.

This time the fire has already spread to an area of ​​five thousand square meters. Only at the cost of tremendous efforts and by applying almost all the special fire fighting equipment collected from the free sites, by evening we managed to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading in the direction of the city.

Only after this incident did the authorities seriously think about the modernization of the landfill. For some reason, then, there was no question of closing it.

How many different "why" ...

Closed, but problems remained

The townspeople and residents of the village of Krasny Bor were happy. Still, the headache of the entire area has been eliminated!

The joy did not last long.In the rivers of the Leningrad region, the concentration of toxic substances has sharply increased. After the trials, it turned out that many enterprises are not at all eager to export their waste to other landfills, and therefore their representatives simply buried the most dangerous materials on the territory of ordinary landfills for municipal solid waste. Of course, there could be no question of any control over their burial and the integrity of the containers, and therefore the consequences did not take long to come.

After that, the State Unitary Enterprise “Krasny Bor” landfill was reopened, a license was issued for another five years, and its service life this time expired just in 2014.

New time

As you might guess, after the final(seemingly) the exhaustion of landfill resources, the question of its fate seemed to be finally resolved. After all, the “Red Bor” test site, whose license has already expired, simply cannot be used because of a legal ban! But it was not there! This year, after the expiration of the license, which was issued in 2009, many organizations asked the city authorities to extend the life of the landfill.

No such decision was made.The leadership of the Leningrad region said that the notorious landfill of waste this time is finally closed, and there will be no talk about the possibility of continuing its operation.

From empty to empty
