The history of the glorious city of Rzhev takes its origin inXI century. Its economic and military importance was due to the convenient location of the city, because of which for centuries it was a struggle between the princes, whose possessions were adjacent to the city, as well as between Lithuania and Moscow. At the end of the 15th century, Rzhev, by decree of Vasily II, was transferred to Boris of Tver, after which his sons were divided. Consequently, a part of the city on the banks of the Volga was named the Prince-Dmitriyev side, on the second, the Prince-Fedorov.
Rzhev, by the beginning of the eighteenth century, was becoming a major commercial and industrial center, where 25 different factories, manufactories, regional fairs, and warehouses and docks were built.
The city of those years is the city of the Old Believers.Of the 8,000 Old Believers in the entire Tver Region, 2/3 lived here. But today, little resembles that Rzhev. Landmarks for the most part were destroyed during various wars.
The inhabitants of the city took part in the war of 1812, and then the bold and courageous reconnaissance A. N. Selivanov, who once captivated Napoleon, became especially famous.
A bloody and tragic page in the history of RzhevThe years of the Great Patriotic War began, as the city experienced a 17-month occupation, which turned into a mass murder of prisoners of war and residents, the destruction of all institutions and enterprises to the ground, the burning of forests and city parks.
In 1978, Rzhev received the Order of the Patrioticwars of the 1st degree. In 2007, he was proclaimed the "City of Military Glory." Rzhevityan about the courage of grandfathers and fathers will always remind of the eternal flame near the Old Bridge, the Alley of Heroes of the USSR in the park Gratsinsky, as well as the mass graves.
